Crested Butte Search and Rescue, Inc. (CBSAR) operates under the authority of the Gunnison County Sheriff
and is responsible for handling backcountry emergencies within the approximate 4,000 square miles of the
National Forest and wilderness surrounding Crested Butte, Colorado.

CBSAR maintains expertise in high angle rescue, avalanche, and wilderness search operations.

We are fully accredited by the Mountain Rescue Association (MRA).

ORGANIZATION: CBSAR is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization governed by an elected nine member board of directors. We have approximately 30 active and registered members. Our operating and capital expenses are covered entirely by individual donations and grants.

MEMBERSHIP: Membership is open to all who have a sincere interest in mountain rescue, and the willingness and ability to become a competent and safe team member. See Joining button above.

TRAINING: Regular training sessions are held on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday evening every month at 1800 hours, and on the 1st Saturday morning after the 1st Wednesday, at 0900 hours. See Training button above.

LOCATION: The team is based in the Town of Crested Butte, maintaining an equipment cache and training facility near the CB Bus Barn on the north side of town. See Contacts above.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS: The Board consists of 9 members (see Contacts button above).

MISSION DISPATCH: This function is performed by the City of Gunnison (see Contacts), and serves all local emergency response agencies (Fire, EMS, Police, SAR, etc.) on the same VHF frequencies through a repeater system. Click on Dispatch

CERTIFICATION: CBSAR is accredited by the Mountain Rescue Association. We underwent a rigorous, several day re-certification testing process in November, 2006, and passed the test. See CBSAR News Article

WHO PAYS FOR CBSAR SEARCH MISSIONS: As a non-profit, all volunteer organization, CBSAR does not charge for its services. Requested outside services, such as EMS and helicopter transport, usually are charged by those agencies.
