November Training:

NOTICE:

Hi all, Hope October was a good break we are back at it again. Starting in November CB SAR will be implementing a RSVP for trainings. There will be a e-mail contact posted on the website, and simply clicking will bring up the link to trainers e-mail (assuming you have an email program on the computer you are using, and that the program is active at the time you are going to send your response). We are trying to make us somewhat committal towards trainings, and respect the time the trainers have put aside. If adequate response isn't met notice will be put out 2 days prior to cancel the training. For those that cant do the e-mail thing a phone # will be posted as well, but e-mail is the preferred response. I know this is new, but lets have a go at it. Feedback is always welcome. Thanks Jay

Future Training's:

1. ICS
We need more people trained in the ICS system. You can do some self training by going to the FEMA site and taking classes. Please go to the following link to see a flier on the independent study classes available to you. If you take a class, and show a copy of your certificate to the Secretary you will get training credit for Active Status. http://training.fema.gov/EMIWeb/downloads/IndependentStudyFlyer0508.pdf

2. Training on Gunnison County Resources
Winnebago Incident Command unit ... we need more people certified to pick up the unit in Gunnison and drive this to the IC. This is another way that Western State could help us. If we have a mission requiring the unit, Western State could be called to deliver it, thus allowing us to keep all our resources on the mission. Zumro Blow Up Shelter ... this is a blow up shelter (packed in it's own trailer) which we can take further into the field than the Winnebago. This shelter is kept at the airport.

3. Computer Operator
We need several people trained to drive the team computer, especially for Search Missions. We currently have Nicholas and myself who could give the IC everything needed to get the most out of our team computer. Since I'm out of town for 4 to 5 months and Nicholas needs to perform other duties, we need to train more people.

I will run a Computer Operator class on either Tuesday, August 18 or Thursday August 20 (I'll go with the majority). The class will run from 6:00 PM to 9:00. Dinner (probably elk chili) will be served at 5:15 PM. This will be a for credit class good for review for people who previously took the class and for first-timers. Please e-mail me advising your choice of the two days. Also, please let me know if you can bring a laptop computer to the training. Do you have TOPO loaded on this computer? We will do the training at my home in CB South. You will learn how to set up the computer and Printer, how to access the TOPO and Map Book software, how to print maps for search planning, and some basics on using the TOPO software. As a side benefit to the training, you will be encouraged to print your own maps using our team computer for hiking, hunting, and guiding. This will serve as homework to give extra training beyond what we can do in a 3 hour session. Please let me know if you want to attend by Thursday Aug 13. I will announce the class date and give you more details on Friday Aug 14. I will not be available to teach this class again until Feb. 2010.

October Training:

None, just get ready for November

September Training:

Sat, Sept 5: Training postponed until Sept 12 to accommodate for Labor Day weekend. See below.

Wed, Sept 12: High angle Bob Wojtalik; Jeff Isaac will do a medical update training at the cache 1800

Wed, 9/2: 1800, Hellicopter training with St. Mary's Care Flight. Have training with flight crew, and Helo will land at CB airstrip. This will be a hands-on orientation with classroom to follow. These folks are coming from Grand Junction just for our training. They are concerned about turnout. It isn't worthwhile to them, and looks bad for us, if we will not be in attendance. Please come out for this one. Please commit and RSVP. Either reply to the e-mail that went out, or call 349-3432 asap!! It will be fun, and c'mon how cool are helicopters? The training will start at the airstrip at Buckhorn at 1800. If you need a ride from the cache, be there before 17:40. We will then return to the cache for a presentation after the Helo orientation. Please bring questions about LZ's, packaging, and anything else.

August Training:

8/19: 1800, K-9 search training w/ Zach Springer. Be prepared to be in class or in the field.

We completed two training's this week covering the "SEARCH" part of Search and Rescue. We covered lots of material and ran a good exercise on Saturday. Western State participated with us and helped by being part of the training mission and by helping teach the class. By copy of this e-mail, I'm asking Ron Edwards to share our thanks with the other members of his team. Training together like this helps us get to know each other and should help as we work on mutual aid missions in the future.

Team members who had never served in key management roles before did a good job in their roles. Thank you to Eric, Jay, and Zach for volunteering to perform these tough tasks. Ian performed the task of scribe/radio operator and made Jay's job easier.

Nicholas ran the computer and has now completed his training. He could perform this task for our team or go on a mission out of our area and be a great asset to the planning team on a search mission. Since Nicholas is a Team Leader, he will probably have to fill other key management roles if we have a search mission in our area.

Thanks to Scott Morrill for making the Winnebago Incident Command unit available for the training's. We now have Randy, Nicholas, and Ric certified to take this unit on a mission (see training below). We now know how valuable this resource is to running a mission, especially in bad weather or on multi day missions.

Sat 8/8: Dumas: Big search mission (Field gear/GPS/Maps). 08:00 At the Cache.
Equipment: Be prepared with a pack and equipment for 3 to 4 hours in the field and have personal GPS units (team GPS units will be available for those without personal units) and pen and paper. We will plan a mission together, then go into the field to do a search, return to the IC to do a debrief, and plan for a second operational period. We will prepare a plan to do a hand off to a team from another agency. Less experienced people will be teamed with someone with more experience to do the search. Since we sometimes enlist the help of non-team members on search missions, you are welcome to bring a friend to go into the field with you. Team leaders and others who can't go into the field will work together to prepare the Operational Plan for the 2nd operational period.

Wed 8/5: Dumas: Search Planning/Maps/GPS (Bring personal GPS, Local CB Maps). 18:00 At the Cache
Equipment: Bring personal GPS units (team GPS units will be available for those without personal units)This will be preparation for the Saturday Aug. 8 field training. We will cover resources available and methods for searching. You will get a chance to view the Mobile Command Winnebago and the blow up Command Shelter. The IC structure and team member roles will be covered. We will demonstrate using maps and the team computer for planning. We will cover as many search techniques as time permits. Team leaders and more experienced members will be asked to help by active participation in the discussions. You will also be asked to volunteer to fill key leadership roles for the Saturday training.

Since search is only covered once a year, it's important that you all participate if possible. Please come to either or both trainings. We also need two non-team members to help by playing the role of victims. Please contact me ASAP if you can find two people to do this. They will be in the field from 10 AM to noon.

YEAR 2008:

December Training:

Saturday 12/6 at the cache.  Training will be riding the snowmachines along with loading and unloading them.  Should be fun.  Thanks to everyone that came out for the Wednesday training to get the snowmachines ready for Saturday. Special thanks to Ric Ems and Jack Hughes for putting on the training.

We have training Wednesday 12/3 beginning 1800 at the cache.  Topic is snowmachines.  Learn the tricks to get them started and get them prepared for Saturday’s (12/6) training which will hopefully involve getting them out on the snow.  Snowmachines are dirty, this is probably not the night to break out your brand new puffy jacket.

For active members *** Wednesday 12/3  is “boot night” at the Alpineer.  The Alpineer has invited us along with other local pros to come to the shop and meet with reps from Black Diamond, Garmont, and Scarpa.  To clarify, this is for tele/at boots only and it is only to place pro-orders  No off the shelf anything, same rules as usual apply to pro purchases.  Thanks very much to the Alpineer for hosting us.

November Training:

Wednesday, November 19, beginning 1800 at the cache.  Topic is “What’s in Your Pack”.  This is always a fun training and it will help you get your SAR pack ready for winter.  Come out, have a beer, and share what you think is important to have in your SAR pack.

November, 5th beginning 1800 at the cache.  Topic is Winter Medical with Jeff Isaac.

October Training:

September Training:

The next CBSAR training will be Monday 8 September at 17:30 at the cache. The subject is helicopter deployment and safety training with Flight for Life from Summit County. Everyone is welcome to this safety briefing. They will also train some members in Air Life’s lift ticket program. We have been asked to limit lift ticket training to the 10 members most likely to use it. The selection will be based on skill set and availability. As always, this training may be modified or cancelled due to weather or availability of the helicopter. We will announce any short notice changes by pager.

We will be running the annual Crested Butte Wilderness Advanced Life Support class 2 – 6 September based in the Plaza conference room on the mountain. The night SAR simulation will be Friday 5 September. If anyone is interested in being a patient or responding as a SAR team for this one, please call Jeff at 275-4999. The experience is always interesting and educational. Last year, SAR staged a response as part of the training and received a $3000 donation from one of the WALS class members!

I am looking for a subject and instructor for a second evening training in September. It could be a Wednesday or Monday. If you have something to offer, please let me know.

Turnout has been very low for Saturday trainings. We suspect that SAR training is not much competition for all the other fun things, and not so fun obligations, of the summer season. We will not hold a Saturday training in September.

Thanks, Jeff Isaac, Training Officer

August Training:

We have training Wednesday, August 20 beginning 1800 at the cache.  Elections will be held.  Dinner for team members after the training is on the team.  Please come out, reconnect with the team and have dinner with us.
